Enter the Volkswagen Tanoak. While just a concept, it gives us an impression of what a future U.S.-market VW pickup could look like — and it’s not exactly a modern Rabbit. It rides on the MQB platform, which underpins everything from the Golf to the Atlas, and it’s that last vehicle with which the Tanoak has the most in common. VW isn’t exactly hiding the fact: The vehicle’s full name is actually the “Atlas Tanoak pickup concept,” which makes the family connection explicit.
Speaking of that name, “Tanoak” refers to a species of oak native to the Pacific Coast (which VW notes, helpfully, can grow up to 135 feet in height) as well as a Humboldt County ghost town.
